The people of Baden-Württemberg don’t like to use superlatives, though their federal state does collect records: number one in Europe for high-tech headquarters. Nowhere else in Germany more patent applications are filed. The district is also known for individuals who like fiddling with things, as Gottlieb Daimler, Carl Benz and Robert Bosch can testify.

Nowadays it is not only Bosch, Daimler, Porsche and Boss that have earned it the title of export world champion, but also medium-sized businesses such as Fischer (plugs), Stihl (saws) and Würth (screws). But it is not all production between Heidelberg and Lake Constance: no other federal state has so many star chefs. And the wines are almost an insider tip.
