Frankfurt-on-Main is the only city in Germany that actually looks like a world city: the tallest buildings, the biggest airport and the most banks in Continental Europe (including the European Central Bank). The superlatives continue thanks, for example, to the railway station and motorway intersection – both the busiest in Germany.

But this metropolis has just 655,000 inhabitants and is not even the capital of Hesse. It is the elegant city of Wiesbaden that boasts this title.

Opel, based in Rüsselsheim, and VW, based in Kassel, are the state’s industry giants, with the ESA European Space Operations Centre in Darmstadt controlling a considerable share of European space activities.
