The Thuringian Forest offers one of the loveliest settings for German hiking trails, in particular the 169 km Rennsteig trail. Other trademarks of the state are the Thuringian Rostbratwurst, Martin Luther’s Wartburg or Weimar’s poet princes, Goethe and Schiller.

Thuringia does not just enjoy a gastronomic and literary tradition. It has always been a state of researchers: Zeiss and Schott built the modern optical goods industry in Jena; Jenaoptic, close to the Opel car manufacturer and Rolls-Royce turbine manufacturer, is, once more one of its most important companies. The provincial capital, Erfurt, also proudly boasts a flourishing biotechnology and solar technology.
